Anxiety Scales for Children and Adults [ASCA]
James Battle, Ph.D.

Ages: 6-0 Through Adult
Testing Time: 10 – 20 Minutes

This instrument assesses the presence and degree of anxiety in children and adults. There are two forms, Form Q for children and Form M for adults. Form Q for children contains 5 questions whereas Form M for adults contains 40 questions.

Features of the ASCA include a wide age range (6-0 through adult); is easy to administer, score and interpret; can be used with both individuals and groups; yields percentile ranks, t-scores and classifications for combined sexes, males and females; quick scoring acetates; oral administration on cassette tape; and provides high test-retest reliability and validity. Since this measure correlates highly with self-esteem it is a perfect companion for the Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventories For Children and Adults, but can be easily used alone in a variety of school and clinical environments.

Examinees can respond independently to the test questions incorporated in the ASCA or they can be administered orally. Raw scores can be determined by using the acetate scoring templates. Raw scores can be converted to percentile ranks, standard scores and classifications which permit comparison of an individual’s score with those of the norm group.

Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale, Second Edition, (BERS-2)
Michael H. Epstein (2004)

Ages: 5-0 to 18-11 years
Administration Time: 10 Minutes
Administration: Individual
Scores/Interpretation: Standard scores, percentile ranks, BERS strength quotient

Designed for use in schools, mental health clinics, juvenile justice settings, and child welfare agencies, the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale, Second Edition (BERS-2) helps to measure the personal strengths and competencies of children. The BERS-2 is a multi-modal assessment system that measures the child's behaviour from three perspectives: the child (Youth Rating Scale), parent (Parent Rating Scale), and teacher or other professional (Teacher Rating Scale). The BERS-2 measures several aspects of a child's strength: interpersonal strength, involvement with family, intrapersonal strength, school functioning, affective strength, and career strength.

Information from the BERS-2 is useful in evaluating children for pre-referral services, in placing children for specialized services, and in measuring the outcomes of services. The BERS-2 can identify children's individual behaviour and emotional strengths and the areas in which individual strengths need to be developed.

All of the BERS-2 scales were normed on representative samples of children without disabilities and the BERS-2 Teacher Rating Scale was normed on children with emotional and behavioural disorders. Demographics of the standardization samples are reported in the manual by age, gender, geographic location, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Separate norms are available on the teacher rating scale for children diagnosed with emotional and behavioural disorders.

The internal consistency reliability of the BERS-2 subtests was established with children without disabilities and with children who were emotionally disturbed. Coefficients exceeded .80 for each subtest and .95 for the overall score. Over 15 studies have confirmed the BERS's content, construct, and criterion-related validity.

Behavior Rating Profile (BRP-2)

Ages: 6-6 through 18-6
Testing Time: 20 minutes
Administration: Individual

The BRP-2 is a unique battery of six norm-referenced instruments that provides different evaluations of a student’s behavior at home, at school, and in interpersonal relationships from the varied perspectives of parents, teachers, peers, and the target students themselves. The responses allow examiners to test different diagnostic hypotheses when confronted with reports of problem behavior. The BRP2 can identify students whose behavior is perceived to be deviant, the settings in which behavior problems are prominent, and the persons whose perceptions of a studentıs behavior are different from those of other respondents.

The BRP-2 is appropriate for students in Grades 1 through 12. The BRP2 components were all normed individually on large, representative populations. The Student Rating Scales normative group included 2,682 students residing in 26 states. The Parent Rating Scales were completed by 1,948 parents in 19 different states, and the Teacher Rating Scales were normed on a group of 1,452 teachers from 26 states. The internal consistency reliability of the BRP-2 components was established with normal subjects and with groups of students who were learning disabled and emo-tionally disturbed. Coefficients generally exceed .80 at all ages. Stability reliability coefficients are also reported. Extensive evidence of validity is reported in the manual. Correlations between the BRP2 components and other measures of behavior are reported.

Complete BRP-2 Kit includes: Examiner’s Manual, 50 Student Rating Scale Booklets, 50 Parent Rating Scale Booklets, 50 Teacher Rating Scale Booklets, and 50 Profile Sheets, all in a sturdy storage box. (1990)

Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventories Third Edition (CFSEI-3)
James Battle

Ages: 6 through 13 years
Testing Time: 15 to 20 minutes
Administration: Individual or group

now in Third Edition!

This completely revised and updated test assesses self-esteem in a culturally fair manner. The CFSEI-3 is a set of self-report inventories used to determine the level of self-esteem in students ages 6-0 through 18-11. Three new age-appropriate forms were developed: Primary, Intermediate, and Adolescent. All three forms of the inventory provide a Global Self-Esteem Quotient (GSEQ). The Intermediate and Adolescent Forms provide self-esteem scores in 4 areas: Academic, General, Parental/Home, and Social. The Adolescent Form provides an additional self-esteem score: Personal Self-Esteem. A defensive measure is also provided to assess the extent to which an examinee's responses are guarded.

The CFSEI-3 is easy to administer and score. It can be administered to individuals or groups in 15 to 20 minutes each. Responses (simple yes-or-no answers) can be either written or spoken. New, easy-to-use Profile/Scoring Forms are now included. Conversion tables provide subscale standard scores based on a mean of 10 and a standard deviation of 3 and quotient scores based on a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The CFSEI-3 was standardized on a sample of 1,727 persons. The normative group was stratified on the basis of geographic region, gender, race, rural or urban residence, ethnicity, family income, parent education, and disability.

Gardner Social (Maturity) Developmental Scale (GSDS)
Morrison F. Gardner

Reflexes, Motor, Social, Cognitive Skills
Ages 0-6 through 8-11
Behavioral Observation Survey
Norm-referenced

The GSDS is a 61-item survey of behavioral observations that is completed by the parent/s and then scored and interpreted by a clinician. The child is not observed directly by the clinician. The observations are related to familiar developmental milestones and behaviors in a number of areas: self-help, education, expressive and receptive language, eye-hand coordination, cognition, locomotion, and gross- and fine-motor skills. Each item (statement) is clearly presented in a forced choice (yes, no) format, making item completion easy and quick, and yielding unambiguous responses. The manual contains a sample completed and scored survey. Also included is an appendix showing the usual age ranges for success with each behavior.

Administration and Scoring
The GSDS takes 15 - 30 minutes to complete and score. Separate scores are derived for each of eight behavioral areas as well as an overall score. Survey results can be reported in terms of standard scores, scaled scores, Z-scores, T-scores, stanines and percentile ranks.

McGhee-Mangrum Inventory of School Adjustment - MISA

Ages: 5-0 through 18-11
Testing Time: 5 to 10 minutes
Administration: Individual

The McGhee-Mangrum Inventory of School Adjustment (MISA) is a 50-item rating scale designed to measure a student’s behavior in the classroom setting. It is appropriate for use by Counselors, Psychologists, and others who want to assess a student’s social adjustment.

Results can be used as part of a comprehensive evaluation to assist with educational programming decisions. It was normed on a representative sample of 2,066 students ranging from 5 years 0 months to 18 years 11 months in age, residing in 21 states.

This test is a psychometrically sound, research-based tool designed to meet the specific goals of:
· Identifying children with school adjustment

· Selecting appropriately targeted guidance intervention programs

· Assisting in communication with parents and professionals about important social/emotional problems affecting educational performance

· Aiding documentation of meaningful academic, behavioral, and emotional problems that warrant referral for special education testing

· Serving as an important component in the evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions (Pre & Post Test)

The MISA contains five 10-item scales, reflecting different aspects of social adjustment that affect academic progress in school settings.

1. Aggressive Behavior Scale — measures physical aggression and hostility. Students who score high on this scale will frequently engage in physical fights, have low frustration tolerance, and are characteristically angry or hostile in interactions with others.

2. Anxiety Scale — measures symptoms of anxiety and lack of self-confidence. High scores on this scale are associated with frequent worry, physical complaints, nervousness, and feelings of inferiority.

3. Attention and Academic Problems Scale — assesses attention span and difficulties with basic academic tasks. Students with high scores on this scale have difficulty maintaining focus on tasks, are easily distractible, frequently do not complete assignments, and avoid academic tasks that require sustained attention.

4. Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Scale — assesses excessive motor behavior and impulsive acts. Students who score high on this scale have difficulty remaining seated and frequently engage in off-task behavior.

5. Oppositional Behavior Scale — measures a student’s noncompliance with authority and rules. Students with high scores on this scale are likely to have frequent conflicts with teachers and often will violate school regulations.

Social-Emotional Dimension Scale (SEDS-2)

Ages: 6-0 through 18-11
Testing Time: 20 to 30 minutes
Administration: Individual

The SEDS-2 provides school personnel such as teachers, counselors, educational diagnosticians, and psychologists with a means for rating student behavior problems that may interfere with academic functioning. It is a highly structured, norm-referenced rating scale that is useful for identifying students who are "at risk" for problematic behaviors. The 74-item scale rates the behaviors of students ages 6-0 through 18-11 years. The total score estimates the degree of problems exhibited by children and adolescents referred for possible evaluation for special education eligibility.

Characteristics and Improvements of the SEDS-2:

  1. Demographics of the normative sample approximate those of the U.S. census on key variables.
  2. Norms are reported separately for males and females.
  3. The absence of racial and ethnic bias has been demonstrated.
  4. Reliability coefficients are provided for subgroups of the sample (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, and age), as well as for the entire normative sample.
  5. New validity studies show the relationship of test scores to similar measures and the ability of the test to discriminate between students with and without emotional disabilities.
  6. Outside experts helped select items.
  7. The number of items in the scale is increased from 32 to 74, providing a greater range of behavioral assessment. In addition, the scoring criteria are expanded and allow more choices in rating frequency of the behaviors.
  8. Reliability and validity studies are included for the new subscales, as well as for the composite scores.
  9. The age range of the test has changed and now includes ages 6-0 to 18-11.
  10. The SEDS-2 includes a 15-item screener and a structured interview form for functional assessment of behavior.
  11. Behavioral descriptors have been added to assist the examiner in rating behaviors on each item.
